Do your trainees learn and perform in isolation? So many important aspects of learning and patient care occur as teams. In fact there are data to suggest that learning in groups is more effective.

Head2Head

Head2Head provides training in skills necessary for minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. It runs on two networked computers, allowing two trainees to compete against and collaborate with each other to complete the tasks. In addition, there is a non-networked mode for training on a single station. Head2Head maximally engages the learners with five competitive and three collaborative levels, all with individual scoring systems for each trainee. Key skills learned include touching, grasping, placing, and holding objects in the virtual environment, and teamwork and communication between the trainees. The system tracks speed, accuracy, and tool efficiency for each trainee.

Head2Head's competitive modules consist of sets, with several rounds per set. The trainee with the most wins in a set increases their total score for their training session while the competing trainee receives no points. The collaborative levels require a trainee to work cooperatively with another trainee to complete as many of the given tasks as possible in the allotted time. Trainees can compare their scores with other trainees or with prior performances.

Head2Head

Some of the cooperative modules require the trainees to work together with their grasping tools in order to successfully complete the tasks. In another, one user "drives" the virtual endoscope, controlling the view for both, while the other person uses their tools to complete the task. In addition to technical skill, these modules require communication between the trainees for best results.
