User Groups
Physicians
General surgeons, gynecologists, urologists, residents in training in those specialties, and medical students learn basic skills for minimally invasive surgery using EndoTower and RapidFire/SmartTutor.
Nurses
Training for nursing students in either RN or BSN programs allows only limited operating room time; therefore, that time must be used efficiently. Using EndoTower to learn how to navigate with a laparoscopic camera will improve skills for assisting during laparoscopic surgery and reduce student stress in mastering the technique in the operating room. Likewise, RapidFire/SmartTutor will help a student nurse to learn the skills for grasping or transferring objects during minimally invasive surgery without adding to the duration of actual surgery.
Surgical Technicians
Surgical technician trainees must rapidly learn skills for many kinds of surgery. Minimally invasive surgery now comprises a large proportion of surgical procedures for which surgical technicians must assist, often as the first assistant. EndoTower and RapidFire/SmartTutor are effective and efficient trainers for basic laparoscopic skills (placing, transferring, and grasping). Studies are in progress at the University of New Mexico to validate technician training using EndoTower and RapidFire/SmartTutor.
